What to do with dead pages?

I have a a page on site with all the latest news on our subject. It has links to about 20 pages on what has happend in the last few weeks.

Now some pages are getting quite old, and have been spidered by google and come up as backlinks for the site.

Should I keep all the old news pages on some kind of archive page, or shall i just delete them.

What do you do with your dead pages?

We archive old news items.

Also use a custom 404 to keep people on the site.

Archiving is the best idea, guys might be looking for older news, and it makes your site larger, Google gives you more PageRank...
