I am lots of long articles and i thought that having a dark grey instead of the traditional black would be more pleasing to the eye.

What do you think? Do any of you also think this is good practice or stick with the tried and tested black?

Hard to say without seeing the page, don't forget the font styles such as times or arial you use.

Why not break up long articles into smaller ones linked on different pages, that will make it easier for people to read as well as giving you more advertising opportnities

You might want to take a look in the "Accessibility and Usability" forum here. There have been threads on fonts and colors and even length of pages that could be helpful.
