Duplicate Images

Do duplicated images effect SERP?

Hi Guys,

I upkeep a car company's websites. This company has two duplicated franchises, ie two dealerships that sell the same brand of car with separate websites, each with their own domain.

I want to use the same images for the duplicated franchises' websites, with different copy.

My first question is; will this attract a duplication penalty from Google?

Secondly, if it does attract a duplication penalty will renaming the images help or do the SEs recognise the jpeg file as a duplicate irrespective of different names?

I do rename duplicate images if needed. I wouldn't think search engines can tell if the pics are the same except for the name.
