I have been thinking of writing articles for link exchange for my self and wanted to know what copyright issue be there for me to be aware of.

However, from a layman's perspective.

Data is not copyright, presentation of data is copyright the person who created it. This copyright may be transfered to a third party.

If you write an article, you own the copyright to it. If a magazine agress to publish it, part of the agreement is often that you transfer copyright ownership to them.

If you copy an existing article written by somebody else, you can not legally republish it without their consent.
