Does it effect the original copyright?

I've got a book that I'd like to make available on the internet.

The original book was published in the US and copyrighted in 1922 (thus making it in the public domain). But, it was later revised at least twice, most recently in the 1950's. Obviously the revised books remain under copyright (they were renewed at the appropriate time). Does that effect the copyright status of the original 1922 work?

No, only the revisions are copyrighted.

Excellent. Thank you very much :-)

(Now I know what my next project is going to be for the next year or more :-)

For more info, take a look at the guttenberg project. They put public domain info out for grabs. They have a lot of info about what you are asking.

The short answer is the original is fair game. The revisions are still under copyright.
