Opt in List Building

Hi all,

Anybody have any success in what is called "opt in list building".

Been investigating this form of marketing and looks to have some potential if done right.

It seems to me to be a form of email marketing.

The way I see this form of marketing is...

1- Build a list of subscribers by advertising on various places on the internet such as ezines, or websites and/or asking webmasters for a "joint venture" partnership. To get people to subscribe offer a free gift or something.

2- Writing a periodic newsletter related to the product/industry

3- What seems more important than just building a list is build a RESPONSIVE list.

Anyone have any success with this form of marketing, suggestions, etc?

Or "Marc don't even go there it's a waste of time?

Marc,

Through the process of doing R&D on another venture, I discovered some companies who specialize and instruct on opt-in lists.

Do some searches on newsletter templates and see what pops up - both paid and organic listings. See what they're doing, and even sign up for one of their how-to documents if the mood strikes you. I was surprised at the size of the market outside of some of the bigger names.

Hope this helps.

Done well, an in-house list can be one of he biggest assets any organization has. It's a form of "retention marketing" in contrast to "acquisition marketing" and it can really boost the lifetime value of a customer or client. It's a whole lot cheaper to retain a customer than acquire a new one.

That said, you know what your own inbox looks like. Assume that the clutter is the same or worse for your list. Make whatever you send a very welcome email. For that reason, I see the best use of a list as being sending out valuable or at least interesting information.

The marketing part is mostly about keeping your name "top of mind" for these folks, not throwing constant sales pitches. One sure way to get opt outs soaring (or no-opens) is to do nothing except hammer away in a commercial fashion.

So keep the "responsive" part real but dialed way down.

The best thing to do is offer something extremely valuable for free, used to get 3-5 opt-ins per day. Now, we get 40-50 because we give an excellent E-Book away.

Also, make sure you go with Aweber or Getresponse, someone who has DOUBLE opt-in.
