I've seen some websites that are articles collections in which youhave to pay to submit your articles.
There are other websites in which you can submit for free, then they earn money for displaying ads in their sites while showing the articles.
Which model is the most common you have seen?
And which do you think is the most likely to have success?

The most common is by far showing the articles with ads without charging the writer. I think starting out allowing writers to submit articles without any charge would lead you to the most success in the beginning. But once the web site gets popular (A few thousand hits per day) enough you could charge for article submissions.

Maybe a better way is allowing writers to upgrade their membership from free to pro. The pro membership could allow their articles to rank higher then articles submitted by free membership users. It could also allow their articles to be featured on the homepage.
