I got a letter from a lawyer claiming that I am using a copyrighted of displaying ad ID numbers in the URL.

We both use ad id number in the URL such as:
http/:34567.example,com

I am guessing that i am not doing anything wrong, does anyone know of another site that uses this method so i can show them that their idea is not original?

Thanks!

Can a number be copyrighted?

I think that you are just ranking better than him, he is just trying to make you change your url so you have to spend time and guessing how to rank better again.

I don't think such a method can be copyrighted.

Instead of you going crazy trying to prove to him that it is not wrong, ask him to prove to you that he really has a 'certified' copyright.

That is what I would do.

PS: I'm not a legal advisor, just in case ;-)

methods and ideas are not eligible for copyright protection. They may be eligible for patent protection.

Although ideas and methods are eligible for patent protection, I seriously doubt that the 'copyright' claims hold any weight. The fact that the 'lawyer' mentioned copyright instead of patent violation means that they're probably just taking a chance.

Even if they did say you violated a patent, ask for proof/patent number. Additionally, I seriously doubt that using an ad id in the subdomain would be able to be patented. There must he hundreds of websites doing exactly the same thing!

I must add in the usual disclaimer that I'm not a lawyer, so this is just my opinion!
