Hi all,

I am a new member and am hopeful for some expertise. Please help.

I want to set up a site that has links to other top sites. My site will be what I consider to be the best of the web, and I would like to share my findings with other users. My question is do I need permission to link to sites such as cnn.com or microsft.com etc.

Also I would like to provide screen shots of some computer games etc. Would this be braking copyright laws etc.

Kind regards,
Russ,

Hi!Russ,if you want to have links, you don't need to take anybodys permission. But for games and stuff you need to take permission.

If you do a review of a computer game--a useful review--you could certainly argue that one or two screenshots as illustrations would be OK under fair use, and that you wouldn't need to seek permission.

I would want to know the policies of the big game companies before taking a chance on that, though.

One thing you might not want to link to is anything that mentions how to break DRM (Digital Rights Management), otherwise someone may come after you with a legion of laywers. Other than that, most web sites love to get linked to, it is worth checking to see if they have any policy page on their site about it though.
