Where are the travel databases hiding?

Google, Yahoo, suggestions anyone?

I'm looking for a database of travel destinations and accommodations. I've tried researching this but all I'm finding is sites offering travel details (with the normal AM links). I need the actual database. Anyone have some advice on where to look for this, i.e. google search terms.

I've found some pretty good resources for the States from government sites (i.e. the census), but nothing for international.

What exactly do you want? A directory of every settlement in the world, together with details of every hotel, boarding house, motel and youth hostel in that location?

If so, there is no such database, and any would be out of date before you could publish it, but feel free to create your own! If you need a reviewer to travel to the Seychelles - expenses paid - and check the hotels, let me know <g>

I understand the difficulties of such a database, but the big dogs out there have it - you know the Travelocities of the world. Or, how did Google Maps have all their geographical info the day they released their new app? Somewhere out there this type of information exists.

I would imagine the Travelocity kind databases are copyrighted. They probably invest a lot of money in creating and maintaining those db's up to date... Don't think they'd just be giving it away.
