im gathering relevant news articles for my site from which i quote one or two lines. i always put up a link to the originating page

Probably. But if you plan on making a regular practice of this, you should get an opinion from a lawyer specializing in copyright.

is this the general consensus on such practises? i do plan to do this regularly and thus build up a solid resource centre for my widgets.

ie, if they were in the news, you can def find the article on my site
