I've noticed that when I hover over something which normally has an alt tag it doesn't appear while I'm using Linux. Is tha a normal feature of Linux or Mozilla? Should it be a normal part of Linux I wonder if that in the long term had anything to do with Google ditching the alt tag - although I'm still not a firm believer in that theory - not according to the serps I've seen.

It's Mozilla. Unfortunately they didn't make the alt / title tip a built in feature. But thanks to Piro (Shimoda Hiroshi) it can be added with minimal effort. Just install his "Popup ALT Attributes" XPI package, restart the browser, then you should be set. (Do a Google search for "Popup ALT Attributes" with the quotes, his site is the first result). :)

It doesn't display because alt is supposed to be a literal alternative for an image or other object (e.g. plugin) in the page; Mozilla only displays the alt if the image is broken or image display is turned off. The "hover text" that often renders as a tooltip is taken from the title attribute. Still makes it harder on the developer, of course.

It doesnt make it harder. If you have been doing things correctly you should'nt have any problem.

What I meant is that it's annoying not to be able to preview your alt tags without turning off image display. That's not a criticism of the underlying semantics.

I like Piro's extension. It's nice to be able to hover and see the alt text without having to open the page info or image properties dialog, imo.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'd imagine it's quite obovious I'm quite the NEWBIE using Linux, but the more I use it the more I enjoy it. I don't think Mr. Gates will be getting any more of my money when the next rendition of Windows hits the stores.

If you want to see all your alt tags quickly in Mozilla/Firebird, use the Media tab of Page Info.
