How is Gimp?

How does it compare with say PaintShop Pro?

Just getting interested in learning Gimp. Right now, I am familiar with Windows PaintShop Pro.

Wondering how Gimp compares to PaintShop Pro or some other graphics program like Adobe Elements.

Thanks!

hi knotty,

gimp can easily compared with paintshop pro. it is (one of if not) the best bitmap imaging program for linux. there is win32 port of it.

even adobe - seller of the (leading?!) prog named photoshop - named gimp as the only program which is quite near to photoshop at all - which says a lot.

download it and give it a try. some really cool stuff can be done with gimp - believe me ;).

Hi Hakre, Thanks for the reply. I'm very glad of the report. I would prefer to use Linix all the way, instead of using Wine if I could help it.

The graphics program was my only stumbling block. I can't quite justify Photoshop so PaintShop Pro was fine for me. Now, I'll start learning Gimp and won't have to turn the Windows machine on to do graphics.

Thanks!

If someone is looking for a simpler photo editor, check out xpaint. While basic, it is still quite capable.

Thanks for the info, I'll check it out. Actually my needs are very little. I mainly adjust photos for the web and maybe mess with text a little so, I don't need to much of a graphics program.

There's quite a few books on the Gimp. Just search on Amazon or some other book dealer.

I didn't think to check Amazon for a book on Gimp. That's great! I'll check it out now.

Thanks!

Quick and dirty gimp howto

With an image already open:

To crop the image use the scalpel shaped tool. Click on the top-left or bottom-right of the result area and pull a rectangle. Use the top-left or bottom-right to redimensionate the cropped area. Use top-right or bottom-left to move the area without redimension. Click inside the rectangle to crop the area.

To save the file right-click inside of the drawing, and select file->save as. The dialog lets you select the type of the archive. Select JPEG or put the .jpg extension to the file, and a very detailed dialog will appear once you press "accept". Enable "preview" and keep an eye on the drawing's window, then adjust the quality with the sliding bars. It's possible too to watch dinamically the size of the resulting image.

To add text use the tool with a "T". Click on the position of the drawing where the text will be, and the dialog lets you choose a font, style and size. Put your text on the lower box. Press "accept" and the text will stay selected, to move it place the cursor over it and the four-arrows cross appears.

Thanks for the tips duckula. I'm finding lots of the functions and tools are similar to Paintshop Pro so that makes it a little easier.

I went to Amazon and they have a few books I'll look at.

Have a good weekend,
