Running Dreamweaver on Linux

I've seen many requests for a Linux version of Macromedia's Dreamweaver web design program. I eventually tracked down a few sites that said Dreamweaver could be run on Linux, using WINE, or some similar program.

However, I'm a bit suspicious. Given the great demand for both Dreamweaver and Linux, I would think the news would have circulated widely across the Internet.

So I just wanted to ask if anyone can verify that Dreamweaver can be run on Linux without any major problems. I'm not a Linux user yet, but I'm hoping to join the revolution in the near future - and my dependence on Dreamweaver is one of my biggest obstacles.

Thanks!

Hi Web_Dave

I'm yer man - I have been trying to use DW on Linux for about a year now.

Yes it can work using Wine - but not very well. Its slow and flaky and crashes when you try to use some functions.

The only way I got it to work was with Win4Lin, which installs windows 'inside' Linux. It worked pretty well, but was somewhat slower - usable but not brilliant.

It was touch and go, but I have now moved my web design stuff back to a windows box :(

Bummer, but thanks for the tip.

The folks at Macromedia seem awfully NON-interested in the Linux community. I suspect they have some sort of financial arrangement with Microsoft and may even be trying to make Dreamweaver NOT work with Linux.

Oh well, I imagine someone will find a solution eventually.
