Research firm Gartner has predicted that use of Linux on the desktop will rise from seven percent to 14 percent in the space of two years.

Vardanega said Acer was responding to requirements from a number of private and public sector companies which were running trials of Linux as a viable desktop platform.

So now we have a few minor players selling OEM Linux, will the big players be far behind?

Sounds great to me! I have been eyeing Linux on the desktop for sometime now myself, only a few applications that I use routinely on a PC really keep me "chained" to the platform.

Now though, with more & more Linux options, I am sure the productivity gain I would get from the switch would outweigh the productivity loss from shifting to a new box. Just have to work it into the budget, now ;)

As for larger manufacturer's following suit, it seems to me that with MS announcing the discontinued web browser, etc - more & more people will be clamoring for an alternative, either Mac or Linux.

Due to financial reasons, I'm 100% sure that more people would chose Linux. Which, from what I can tell, would only further stimulate consumer & business demand for a manufacturing switch, or at least, better diversification.

just installed suse linux on my pc at home and loving it. for the smaller win apps
i use the wine emulator, for the others i boot my w2k partition.
i remember trying to install suse 7.0 and it was a disaster, but now all the
different distros have good installers to make it easy to setup.
