What is the proper way to reset the bash comand line history. I see how to reset the size and how to set an alias, but can you clear it?

Dunno if there's actuall a command to clear it, I've always done:

echo > .bash_history

12:40 pm on Dec 4, 2001 (gmt 0)

history -c should work.
