Yeah, that's not the way KDE and Gnome work. You usually have to log out of KDE and go to your session manager to make the switch.

Quick question first, what distro are you using?

Typically you just log out of KDE and a session manager will take over. There you will be able to choose which window manager to use.

Because you have KDE you are very likely to have KDM which is the session manager for KDE. How you configure KDM is very much dependent on which distribution you are using.

Debian, from the previous thread. I got it installed, but I had to eintall RH first, copy the XF86Config file to floppy, install Debian and switch configs to get the little sod to work ;)

I didn't install it with a default graphical login, I get a text one, I prefer it as there are quite a few programs I like to use withot the need of anything but text...

There may be another approach, but probably your simplest bet would be to:
apt-get install (session manager)

I like wdm a lot, and it tends to install easily without having to mess with other packages.

So, it would be:
apt-get install wdm
KDM, XDM and GDM ore some other choices.

BTW, Bonzai [webmasterworld.com] would have auto configured X for you. It cut a Debian install down to about 30 minutes.

Try as root:
dpkg-reconfigure wdm
Then, if in text mode, type wdm. If in X try logging out, killing X then start wdm and see what happens.

>>dpkg-reconfigure wdm

No, it doesn't like that command ;)

Actually I lied, I do have a graphical login. I can't see wdm in the list under 'session' but saying that Gnome 1.4 actually runs very nicely indeed.....
