I'm going to be getting an older computer and putting Mandrake Linux on it for my webserver. Here are the specs:

300mhz CPU
64MB SDRAM
8 gig Hard Drive
DVD ROM 8X/10X
Nvidia Graphics Card

As long as I run the server in commandline mode it should be ok in terms of server load right? I could always up the RAM to 128MB or 256MB. Is the amount of RAM you have on the server an important factor in figuring out how much strain you can put on a server? Thanks for the help. :)

You forgot to consider if you're serving static or dynamic pages. And the speed and tuning of the hard drive affects a lot, too.

Of course volume is also a major factor. Yet, basic web hosting isn't an enormous job for the average mom and pop shop.

I believe the hard drive runs at 7200 RPM. My website is mostly going to be .php dynamic pages. I don't get a lot of traffic though.

Is the drive IDE or SCSI?

If this is going to be an 'in house' web server I really don't think that the hardware on your current config really matters. If at some point that you notice some hit increase I think that adding a harddrive or two would be nicer. If you set up your install and your partitions correctly during your install adding a hardrive to accomodate the future workload will be seamless. All in all if this is a personal web server thing, then I think you have put together quite a server to hold what you need. Great Job!. That is the beauty behind linux/unix, it is virtually dynamic on how you can run it, install it, and use it---> only if you do things correctly. Hope I had some insight...just a little

Um, I'm not sure about the drive... I'm sure it will be ok. I'm probably just over worrying myself over it. If it seems slow I can always upgrade the hardware or try to optimize Linux in some way. Thanks for the suggestions. :)
