I have a new comp and it has a winmodem in it. Yes I know its not best, but I also know I have a winmodem that will work if this one wont. My question is does anyone know if you have to have MS installed inorder for it to work?

Hi Knowles,
It depends on the chipset of the modem. Here would be a place to start. [linmodems.org...]

So some chipset will require windows to be installed while some others will not? I have read through linmodems.org and other resources but none of them state rather windows must be installed. Thats my main question. Am I wasting my time trying since I do not have windows installed on it.

If I understand it correctly you don't need windows but you need the right drivers and software. So finding out if your specific modem is supported by Linux or not is the challenge.

Might be quicker to just swap it out
