I just install Webmin to my Fedora 5 machine. I can log in locally with [localhost:10000...] or [192.168.1.8:10000...] but cannot log in remotely. Port 10000 of my router has been opened. Is there any setting needed to set before I can log in remotely?
I am new to Linux and Webmin, please help

What happenns when you visit your server from the outside world, do you get a timeout or a page not found message?

Mack.

Thanks for your reply Mack. The solution is solved. Port 10000 of Fedora is default blocked by its built in firewall (iptable). The problem is solved by opening port 10000 but I don't know why I can log in with [localhost:10000...] before then.

To make webmin safer try running it in secure mode i.e. with https:

It's also a good idea to change the port number to something other than 10000 to prevent opportunist attempts at loging in.

First make sure that your router (and the fedora iptables firewall) is allowing the new port number.

Goto Webmin-Webmin Configuration->Ports and Addresses
set Liston on IP's and ports to specific port e.g. 10010

Logout of webmin and restart it.

To be even more secure you can specifically set webmin to only accept conenctiosn from an exact IP address. Use this if you have static IP and only ever plan to login from one location.
