What is ipop3d?

I've noticed that a great deal of my server resources are being absorbed by a process called ipop3d. My understanding (admittedly vague) is that this is related to a mail process, but that's about all I know. Anyone able to offer an explanation?

ipop3d in one of your "mail daemons" ... the other probably being "imapd", on many systems. ipop3d handles the POP (Post Office Protocol) mail. As long as ipop3d is running, mail is accessible on your system using that protocol. Most mail clients, like Outlook or Thunderbird, allow the user to select which protocol they want to use (POP3 or IMAP) when dealing with their mail.

I hope you are running a mail server for your users ... otherwise your server may be being victimized by a spammer ...

Thanks for the reply, that makes sense.

I run a bulletin board that sends out lots of emails (notifications of posts, etc.), so I suspect that's the process that's doing it.

hi m_b_walker,

that doesn't sound like a normal use for ipop3d. as SS said, you need pop3 to collect mail, not to send mail (you'd use sendmail for that).

many servers come with these daemons pre-installed. if you are not using your server as a mailserver (i.e. you don't login and collect mail from it) then you could disable this daemon from running.
