I know there are countless flavors of Linux... I have an extra box laying around that I'd like to test pages out with a KHTML based browser (Konquerer).

I am also interested in running Apache (locally) for PHP development.

So...
KHTML browser
Text editor equivelent of Notepad
Apache web server

I'm in class right now installing redhat (which did not include khtml as far as I could tell in the packages).

I'm not sure how I'll have to handle drivers...I'm running.. an AMD64 GA-K8NS Ultra-939 and also have an rdram based 533 msi board. Didnt spot any drivers for gigabyte. I have an ATI AIW 9700Pro and a geeforce mx card laying around. I'd consider myself extremely comfortbale with Windows so analogies may help me greatly. Both boxes run a GB and I'm also interested in completely disabling any VM/PF (basically I don't want my hard drive being used as memory if I can help it).

Any other advice or suggesitons are very welcome...

Kubuntu: [kubuntu.org...]

Download the AMD64 version of the Live CD, burn it, put the result in the CD drive and reboot. After about one minute you should see a login screen which will take you into a fully-featured Linux desktop running KDE. Nothing is installed on the hard drive - simply take the CD out and reboot again to get back to Windows. It's a great way of testing for Linux compatibility too. If you like it, then get the install CD. I use Kubuntu 5.04 on AMD64 on my main machine - just perfect for my needs. I have Apache 1.3.33 (you can also have 2.x), PHP/MySQL, all installed and auto-configured with a couple of commands.

KHTML is the underlying rendering engine for the Konqueror browser. Konqueror is part of the KDE desktop environment. You can get KDE for all the major distributions - with the Red Hat that you are installing, just specify KDE as your default GUI during the install process, or load the packages from the CD or from the Red Hat repositories.

I saw KDE as a package but did not see Konquerer listed as one of the components.

The boot CD seems nifty ... I will give that a try! I won't make my main system a Linux box though. If I gotta relearn how to walk I'm not about to jump in the car! ;-)
