Just want to make sure Im downloading the right files, have used Linux brifly before but am still very new. Depending on the distro I can see the following options:
i386, i586, x86_64 and PPC
What is the difference between these? Does it refer to your computer? Am trying to install on a Sony Vaio, 2.8Ghz Celeron, 512 Mb Ram.
Which set of disks would I be best to download?
i386: standard Intel 386 (32-bit) architecture
i586: as i386 but optimized for newer processors (Pentium and above)
x86_64: For AMD 64-bit processors and later Intel Pentium P4s
PPC: PowerPC processor, used mostly in Apple hardware
Depending on your choice of distribution, you should download the i586 version as your Celeron processor is an Intel 32-bit processor. Sometimes you will see an i686 which will work for you too, as will the i386 (but it will be less well optimized for your processor).
