Mdk. 10.1 OE Fresh Install: DVDs don't play

Apologies if this is not the place to ask but the usual Mdk Forum has been off the web for days.

Mandrake 10.1 OE in a new desktop from CDs md5sum checked OK. Clean fresh installation, sole OS.

Thrilled with Linux. All programmes working smoothly except I can't play my only DVD.

I've tried viewing it using Kaffeine, which plays CDs fine, but when I put in the DVD (which is a new and legitimate DVD PAL code free edition) I get this error message:

"The source can't be read.
Maybe you don't have enough rights for this, or source doesn't contain data (e.g: no disc in drive). (/dev/dvd)"

There is a disk in the drive, and I'm certain there's no problem with the dvd, it's already been viewed on a dvd player OK.

Using urmpi, I downloaded the latest plf and installed libdvdcss succesfully, but I still get the same error message.

The setup and setting are pretty much the 'default' ones with Mdk 10.1.

This is my first time using Linux. Anybody help?

Ta!

It sounds as if the DVD drive is only accessible when you're connected as root rather than as a normal user. Unfortunately, I'm not running the latest Mandrake (I'm still stuck on 9.1) and I don't have a DVD drive, so I can't give a very specific reply. Do you have icons on the desktop in permanence or do they appear only when you place a DVD in the drive? The best way for the DVD drive is to have it auto-mounted only when required.

This is mostly case when you first install linux on your machine. Some distros will protec their distro by saying such messages, I remember RH9 wouldnt want to play mp3s! (fresh install) Similiar error to yours. Get new version of your player, or get required plugins and that's it.

Since you're a newbie, easiest way to check if your dvd is working. Popin regular dvd (files or something) if it's not working then you have problems with your dvd, and dvd-rom needs to be installed. However I highly doubt this.

Get xine, (xinehq.de) get the required plugins and you should be fine.

In the end why did you chose mandrake?
