Unix is a lot of things -
first off, a time-sharing system that came out in 1971 and has been going strong as an operating system ever since.
There's also another issue regarding Unix that Netbsd puts nicely:
If something looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, what is it?

The answer, of course, depends on whether or not the name `duck' is a trademark!

And the Open Group controls the trade mark, and issues it to whom it pleases - with the possibility, of course, of imposing a hefty fee for the trademark's use.

Because of this, Linux and the BSD's (FreeBSD, NetBSD) are sometimes called '*nixes' or 'unices' since they haven't been issued the rights to use the Open Group's trademark, but by all intents and purposes, 'look like a duck, walk like a duck, and quack like a duck.' Fortunately for ducks, duck is not a trademark.

There's also the issue of the old Unix source code, and SCO, but that seems to have pretty much died.

A system which is officially called 'Unix' then is likely to be a commercial distribution by a corporation who has enough money to afford the use of the Open Group's trademark.

The only true UNIX-badged operating system seen in use by a few hosting companies is Sun Solaris. However, it may just be that they are using the term "UNIX" to describe a Linux, FreeBSD or OpenBSD installation.

Best way is to send a quick email to the hosting company asking them precisely what operating system and web server software they use. For basic sites, the practical difference between Solaris, Linux and FreeBSD is negligable - however, if they are running software other than Apache, that can make a difference.
