The Boston Group Hacker Survey [osdn.com] has examined the open source / free software community - well, mainly sourceforge.net.

Boston Group, a management consulting firm, was interested in lessons their clients could learn from the f/os community.

To their surprise the surveyors found beating Bill a minor motivation for geeks - having fun, getting stimulated by exchange with others and getting immersed in the code were the most offered reasons for involvement.

The whole thing is rather hilarious - should perhaps been in Foo - but is worth a read anyway.

The percentage of respondents to their survey should have led them to the conclusion that open source participants don't like surveys and pretty much left to declare that they have a statistically insignificant result, and not much else -lol
