Firefox question

I am in the process of switching over to a computer with linux and would like to move my favorites from ie into firefox. I didn't see anything on their support pages about how to do this. They did mention how to move bookmarks from opera into firefox though. Has anyone moved their ie bookmarks into firefox successfully? I have a copy of my favorites folder on the new computer, just can't figure out how to make use of it.

Also, does anyone here know how to make firefox the default browser? I didn't see anything about that on their support pages either, but maybe I just missed it.

Which Desktop Manager are you using, if you are using KDE. Go to control center -> KDE Components -> File Associations -> text then for htm, html ..etc move firefox to the top of the list or add it if its not there.

For Gnome type this is shell

gnome-default-applications-properties

its pretty self explanatory from there.

Mark

I tried :
gnome-default-applications-properties

and yes, it should have been self explanatory, but for some reason under browser, it is not listing Firefox. Only, mozilla/netscape6.

I tried adding firefox in the custom browser part, as that seemed like the only choice. I typed it in as Mozilla-Firefox and also tried just as firefox. I even added the '%s' as it says too. Now when I click on a link, nothing happens. I don't know if I have the name wrong, or maybe I need to reboot before it starts working.

I got my bookmarks moved over! I thought I could just take the favorites file over to the new computer and transfer them that way, but I had to actually to an export in Ie, save that file, then bring it to the new computer and import it.

Not sure if the default browser thing is set up right or not. Any other browser I've used had a place where you decide if you wanted it to be the default browser. Here, I'm still having to type in the name. But when I click on a link in an email, it does nothing.

If you installed from a tar.gz package, you might try deleting firefox and installing from an RPM. [dag.wieers.com...] has a bunch of releases, or you could just search for one. I think an RPM does a better job of registering the browser with the system... it worked for me.

I am using firefox and kmail in kde, I believe there is a known fault with the way firefox starts up when there is already a profile open. The bug is that it asks you which profile you would like to open when clicking on an embedded anchor in Emails, therefore meaning you then have to copy and paste the URL into the address bar. I have yet to find a fix to this.

Yes, this bug has apparently been fixed in the latest nightly builds and will be in Firefox version 1.0.

For the mailto: protocol not working, check out claus's reply in message 4 of this thread which explains how to make it work:
