my stats stopped updating.

I tried to do it manually, I get this:

Error: Can't open log file /home/ffshrine/logs/access_log
Webalizer V2.01-10 (Linux 2.4.18-686) language

what can I do to fix this?

Have you tried downloading the raw log file? If you can dl the log file, you can run it through something else, (Analog, whatever), or just look at it with Wordpad. If you can't dl the log file, that might be the problem, (such as it isn't even in the log folder on the server because of your hosting company).

in /logs/ I have the following:

access_log (0 bytes)
error_log (0 bytes)

and then a bunch of

error_log.1.1.1.2.gz.1.3.gz.1 error_log.1.2.gz.1.2.gz.2.gz.1.1 error_log.2.gz.2.gz.1.3.gz
error_log.1.1.1.2.gz.1.3.gz.1.1 error_log.1.2.gz.1.2.gz.2.gz.2.gz error_log.2.gz.2.gz.2.gz
error_log.1.1.1.2.gz.1.4.gz error_log.1.2.gz.1.2.gz.3.gz error_log.2.gz.2.gz.2.gz.1
error_log.1.1.1.2.gz.2.gz error_log.1.2.gz.1.3.gz error_log.2.gz.2.gz.2.gz.1.1
error_log.1.1.1.2.gz.2.gz.1 error_log.1.2.gz.1.4.gz error_log.2.gz.2.gz.2.gz.1.1.1
error_log.1.1.1.2.gz.2.gz.1.1 error_log.1.2.gz.2.gz error_log.2.gz.2.gz.2.gz.1.2.gz
error_log.1.1.1.2.gz.2.gz.1.1.1 error_log.1.2.gz.2.gz.1 error_log.2.gz.2.gz.2.gz.2.gz

things like that. with varying file sizes.

error_log.1.1.1.2.gz.1.3.gz.1 error_log.1.2.gz

That stuff looks like a bunch of zipped error_log files.

access_log (0 bytes)

That looks like your logs aren't being updated, unless I'm mistaken.

It might be an idea to contact tech support at your hosting company to see what's going on.

it's a free host, so we don't really have tech support.

is there anything in particular I should tell the guy who runs it to look into?

Probably just best to tell him what's happening and ask him to have a look at the log folder.

It really doesn't cost very much to get webhosting these days... if you intend to keep the site going, and improve on it, you might want to consider spending a little money and getting something better.

we go through almost 200 gigs a month, so I'd imagine it'd cost a bit :\
