Any good non-Redhat books...

Directed to the Linux newbie?

Hi, I have a person interested in Linux, and his birthday is coming up soon. I'm thinking of giving him a Gentoo Live CD or possibly Knoppix CD that he can play around with along with a good book on Linux.

Any books you would reccommend for the newbie that *isn't* Redhat specific?

I have Linux in a Nutshell 3rd edition myself, but I dunno... I haven't looked at it too much so far, but I wouldn't say it's what I'd reccommend for a total Newbie. But it's quite possible I'm wrong.

It's a great list on the most useful commands however, and it is generic, so I dunno... Might get around to checking it out again. :)

Try the "other" O'Reilly Linux book - "Running Linux" - (The Essential Guide to Linux - Running Linux)

by Matt Welsh, et al. 4th Edition.

Covers everything from Installation to Hardware issues to LAMP config to GNOME and is Newbie-friendly without the fluff. Also a great reference; has gotten me out of alot of jams.
