In Photoshop 6.0, I was trying to cut out this image w/ image wand tool. However, due to unknown reasons, I haven't been able to eliminate the gray area surrounding the object.
The image I'm talking about is in this URL.
[hp.com...]

Could anyone help cropping this image?

Thanks for any help

Use not only the wand, but also the lasso to refine the selection. You can press Shift to add to the current selection, and Alt to remove from the current selection.

Also, I sent you a sticky mail...

You're approaching it the wrong way - don't try and cut out the image, instead remove the background.

Use the magic wand to remove as much background as possible - rest is a two minute job with the airbrush going around the edges while zoomed in.

You get better at it after you've done a couple.

another way round is to use the pen tool and cut and paste into a new layer

definately agree with jimbo_mac - the pen tool will bethe best way to get the edges crisp and a nice curve on the corners.

I agree with TrillianJedi

I found you are better to remove the background also. A tip for clean straight edges is to use the line tool with a slightly softened stroke. Once you have the background in white use the magic wand and lasso tool to select the image and erase to transparent the rest of the background - the inverse selection tool will allow to toggle between background and subject matter. You could also use the 'feather selection' which will place a delicate gradient selction around the object so it blends nicely with any new background - depending on the subject.
