(after it has been created)

I know this is an incredibly basic question, but how do I change the color of the background of a file that I create with Photoshop after I have created it? In Fireworks, this is incredibly easy.

I tried going to layer properties and changing the background color there, but to no avail. Not only did it not work, but you can not choose the exact color that you want. You only get a choice of 7 colors. So, obviously that is not the correct way to do it.

If your background layer has nothing on it then go to the color chips on the toolbar. Select the desired color there and fill the background layer.

maybe you are trying to change a gif? convert it to RGB first.
