I have a .mpg file, which opens nicely in Real and Windows Media players on a PC. I could not get it to open in Adobe Premiere (Version 6). I need to convert the .mpg to animated gif. The file is 21 MB. The error message is "File is an unsupported type".

Re-encode it with a stand-alone encoder like:

tmpgenc.net/e_main.html

Hi: Thank you for the quick reply. I downloaded the program but it would not accept the mpg file as source file. I think it's because the mpg is not the original source file. The mpg file was created by someone else and was submitted to us as an mpg. I hope this makes sense.

I just looked at the Premiere version specs - v.6 only opens mpeg1 - v.6.5 will do mpeg2 - you probably have an mpeg2 encoded vid.

I believe VirtualDub can do the conversion for you in this case:

There is also FlaskMPEG and or AVUtil, but Vdub is usually all you need in my experience. :)

Thank you both for your useful info. The file opened in Premiere 6.5 :)
