Photoshop and vectors

I'm relatively new to Photoshop and I'm having some trouble figuring out how to use vectors effectively with it. I understand the vector support is limited compared to something like Illustrator, but I would think the basic fuctions would be there. I have figured out how to create shapes and paths and manipulate points, but the one thing that is confounding me is how to simply make a shape (a box for instance) and change the fill color and stroke color easily. There are icons at the bottom of the "paths" window that say "fill path with foreground color" and "fill stroke with foreground color" or something like that, but they are usually greyed out, and when they aren't it seems like they create a raster fill. I think I'm missing the whole concept of how Photoshop deals with vectors, because it's obviously not the same way other programs do. Could someone fill me in? If there is good Photoshop forum that someone could recommend (I know this may be a little off topic here) that would be helpful.

As you know photoshop deals mostly with pixels and not vectors. Unfortunatly "great" vector support is limited in photoshop, thus easy tasks have to be thought out a little in advance with photoshop. Unfortunatly, there is no easy way to manipulate the stroke and fill colors for vectors in photoshop. Vectors are mostly used in photoshop for text and shape layers, to be used on high resolution devices (printers). Stick with Illustrator or the like for strong vector support and editing tasks.

alt (Mac: option) + backspace = fill with foreground color
ctrl (Mac: command) + backspace = fill with background color

Or just use the paint bucket.

Vector support was what really disappointed me when I first used Photoshop (vector masks? give me a break). I've found that I don't really need the advanced support of Illustrator/Freehand, but I still wanted the simple stuff. Overall, Fireworks seems to be the best balence for general image editing for the web.
