What I want to do is select a certain part of an image, keep that part of the image, but delete the rest of the image that is outside of the selected area while retaining the canvas size.

Please advise.

I am using Photoshop 7.

Thanks.

- Select the part with a "Marquee Tool".
- Press Shift+Ctrl+I to invert the selection
- Press delete

Under the Image menu you'll also find the "Canvas Size" dialog... If you want to specify dimensions other than the original image size, or you accidentally crop the image, you can specify any canvas size you like, and how the image is aligned on it (centered, left, top, etc.).

Thanks, but I need to keep the part that I select in the exact same spot as it is on the orginal image.

another way is to do this:

select the part of the image you want to keep, then copy

go to layers > new layer.. paste the copied image into the new layer, it should paste in the exact spot of the original copy.

you can then trash or hide/switch off the original layer/image.

job done.
