illustrator pdf file for download -- help!

I've read a thread that was posted in April about pdf file creation and optimization for the web in Illustrator. I had moderate success slimming the file with the suggestions prescribed and by my own common sense moves in terms of using standard fonts, not embedding them and lowering file resolution, etc.

But this very, very simple file with a line art table, some text and one small image is still saving as a pdf at 288k! Even crazier than this is when I try to set image compression settings to low jpeg I get LARGER file size than when I sent compression to maximum quality jpegs! NO idea what's going on here. Illustrator seems to be behaving contrary to logic....

Anyone ever had experience with this?

Thanks!

That's the one I was referring to, but I read through it all and there was nothing that pointed to any solution for this file size problem...

This just makes no sense, the only image in my whole layout is a 16k gif. Otherwise it's some 1 pt lines and text in Arial and I'm getting 296k pdf without fonts embedded.

Well, if all you've got is a line-table, text and a GIF on the page, JPEG compression shouldn't enter the scheme at all... Do you actually have Acrobat, or are you using a built-in command from Illustrator?
