AVI to MPEG?

My wife wants to take some AVI movies and convert them to MPEG so we can burn them on to CDs and play in the DVD player.

Is there a program that will convert AVI to MPEG?

VideoMach is free and can import avi, then export as mpeg. Has some effects on it too. Really simple. Although it does take TIME to convert AVIs to MPEGS depending on movie length.

TMPG encoder from tmpgenc.net is free for MPEG1 and has a 30 day trial for DVD compliant MPEG2.
