Hi,

Has anyone got an opinion as to the best software for storing, displaying as thumbnails and searching a large number of image files quickly? I don't need facilities for improving, cropping etc, I have a graphics program for that, but I do need to be able to store a little information about each image, for example who or what it is, copyright etc and be able to search using this information.

This has to be the right decision, because once the database is set up it may not be easy converting to a different vendors software, without a huge amount of work being involved.

There are a number of possibilities, Cerious Software's ThumbsPlus, Extensis' Portfolio, Adobe's Photoshop Album (very new) or Photodex's CompuPic Pro, there are likely to be many others.

I would love to hear your opinion.

Many thanks

StepOne,

have you heard of PhotoPost.

I was looking into their solution for a client of mine.
Seems like a credible and stable solution.

Check it out. Hope it works for you.

Most image formats that you're probably using allow you to store data like that in the image themselves. JPG, for instance, has fields in it for all kinds of data about how the image was acquired, as well as datetime, comments and other things.

Most decent image manipulation software allows you to view and edit these fields. If you need more complex searching ability, there are libraries to read into them (like perl's Image::Info) so that you can script out the act of looking for something or sorting based on something.

Since this is a relatively common, widespread method, you may find that it works with many, or most of the tools that you use. It may get you out of the hole of depending on the proprietary methods of any one tool.

I assume you're looking for something desktop based? I know the standard script download sites have tons of free or low cost gallery scripts (check hotscripts.com or cgi.resourceindex.com for starters), but I'm not familiar with any desktop photo archiving software...
