checked out the old threads on WebmasterWorld and was wondering if anyone had any more upto date favourites or pet hates in this area.

and read some stuff... they're saying that you can get it for 630.00 bucks and they're saying the only con is the 4x digital zoom but as most people know you want to avoid digital zoom over that much anyways. I'm pretty sure if you wanted to be a spy you could purchase a nice lens for professional espionage type of photos.
The key is thinking about your usage and needs before you go looking at cameras. Then, depending on needs and budget, decide if the best game plan is searching for the elusive one-size-fits-all camera or settling for a high/low combination of two cameras.
I am going low/high and love my little Canon s230 a.k.a ixus v3. It won't be mistaken for a foveon zoom monster, but it can go anywhere and get pics the big cameras miss. None of the digital camera sites compare a decent pic by an ultracompact vs. a blank pic by a high-end model that was too heavy and bulky to make the trip, but sometimes that is the reality. Not to say that I don't drool over the high-end cameras. Next year's impulse purchase will be a foveon zoom monster. =)
As for the one-size-fits-many cameras, the Canon G3 looks tempting.
Almost forgot to mention... it can't hurt to check those bargain sites that list all the discounts and codes. A few of those sites are intense about combining discounts for maximum effect, so it makes sense to let them do the dirty work.

I just bought a Canon A40 for my wife and we love it. Very nice.
They look ugly as hell (Kellogs Kodak Cornflakes), but I am amazed at their picture quality. It is as if they accidentally installed a too high quality lens ;)
Although they don't sell the 6800 anymore, Fuji replaced it with the FinePix F601. It will end up costing you about $500(us dollars) and the quality images the camera produces will blow you away.
Highly recommended.

My only real grievance with the C-700 is the miserable manual focus. The camera has a digital view finder, and it is not detailed enough to set the focus manually.
There is a newer version out, the C-730. It is 3 Mpixel, but only 8x optical zoom.
There are loads of pictures taken with the C-700 on the site in my profile.

I put up a picture in my profile URL so you can have a gander at the images the FinePix 6800 produces. It's a picture of our dog on a lazy summer day. I put the camera on the floor and clicked a shot. The size of the image is 1024x800, weighs in at a hefty 250k, but the original was 2200x1700 and 1 meg in size.
I hope it's a flattering example of the image quality of the camera! :)

first impressions are amazement at whats available for the price... additionally my retired ma and pa are on a trip to hong kong so am hoping for an even better price from there!
no real favourites yet but now looking towards the max zoom possible in a small easy to use camera.

The 10X optical zoom was a real must for my purposes. My old one (3X zoom) just didn't cut it for a major part of my applications.
For my purposes, its everything I need. I'm going to get the wide angle lens for it and then I'll be set! I highly recommend this camera.
It is a 3.9 megapixel camera (advertised as a 4.0) able to take photos up to 2272x1712.
Has an 8x Fuji optical zoom, an 7 time digital zoom and a great macro mode! Its an SLR-like, with a neat electronic viewfinder.
The user can control the AE, shutter speed and aperture priority.
Will take video clips at 15fps.
Very awesome camera. It was quite a moveup from my previous digital camera, the Kodak DX 3500.
I got it for $499.
I am very impressed with its performance and I do use it professionally for web design photography. It is in your price range.
And if you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for it and where?
