i take a photo from photoshop at 300dpi, shrink it to 1" x 1", leaving the dpi the same. i put it into a newsletter column, however, the dpi of the image drops considerably... what's my problem? is there a setting that im missing in inDesign? why am i losing resolution?

Have you tried printing to a ps printer? I don't use Indesign (yet) but in Quark if you have an eps (for example) the image quality looks pretty awful on screen till you run it through a post script printer.

To echo what limbo just said, what you are seeing is most likely a proxy image. I don't have InDesign, but I used to work extensively with Quark, and Quark saves system resources by only placing proxy images into your document until you are ready to publish.

Try looking under the "View" menu at "Display Performance" and set it to "High Quality Display"
