Hey there,

I need some maps to post on my site, for most countries, and states, and canadian provinces

I have no idea where to get them from though.

I looked at some clipart things in the store the other day, but none seemed to have maps.

Are maps copyrighted?

Can I scan some and then just post them?

Should I draw my own?

I contacted one site who makes their own maps for clients about using their example maps, but they said no way, I'd have to buy personalized maps that they draw specifically for my site.

Maps! I'm at my map's end!

thank you!

ps if you have a specific site, plz PM me cause you can't post them here...

Check out the CIA Factbook [cia.gov], it's all in the public domain [cia.gov]. Lots of maps [cia.gov].

The maps are only for the US and the server is very slow. They also say the service may not be around much longer.

[tiger.census.gov...]

The Census TIGER data base is the source for maps generated by the TIGER Map Service. The data used to create the maps comes from the Census Bureau, an agency of the U.S. Government, and is in the public domain. Thus the maps you can download from this site are in the public domain and you are free to use them as you choose. They are created on the fly and displayed on the screen in a raster (or bit map) format. They aren't meant to be imported into other mapping or GIS packages. They can be imported into many graphics or paint packages where they can be further manipulated to a limited extent. If you want the base data for use in your GIS or other mapping package visit our TIGER® Page for information on the TIGER/Line® product. We also have some cartographic boundary files accessible from this page.

If you look at the stock photo sites, you'll find that the largest ones have a variety of maps in vector formats for a minimal fee.
