PPI and the Web

I ran into a little snag today that I've never encountered and I wanted to know if anyone has run into this problem before. I had .jpg file and uploaded it to my server and placed the image in a webpage. Well, the page wouldn't display the image. I checked the permissions and checked the code and everything was fine. The only thing was that the resolution of the image was 150 ppi. I didn't think this would be a problem, but I changed it to 72 ppi and re-uploaded the image. Now it works fine.

I didn't know there was a limitation on PPI for web graphics. Has this always been like this or is this a server issue?

A 150dpi jpg will work fine, it's just not necessary to make it that large.

That being said, what program where you using to create the jpg? are you viewing this on a mac or pc? what browser where you using?

If you are using photoshop, make sure you use the "Save for Web" command, not just save as...

It was a professional photo that was taken and I used Photoshop to resize it and keep the same ppi. I also used the "save for web" function instead of "save as". I didn't think I would have a problem using 150 ppi either since at one point I had to use 300 ppi for a client.

I'm using a PC and I viewed the webpage in both Firefox and IE.

Bradshjw,

Sounds to me like a browser issue. Have you tried viewing it on a different machine?

The resolution does not matter, we have 600 dpi jpgs for media info on various sites with no problem.

The PPI doesn't matter for screen viewing at all. It only affects printing.

This is probably a CMYK RGB issue. The original jpeg was in CMYK and won't display. Images need to be RGB.
