Why do photo providers not allow use of their pics on homepages?

Puzzled

I run an independent travel and tourism website for a specific country. The official tourist board of the country agreed to allow me access to their photo library so I could use some of the on my website for free.

However, their terms and conditions state that their photographs may not be used on the front / back covers of print pulications, or on website homepages. Is it me or is this just a bit ridiculus? I can understand the magazine cover situation, but how can it be compared to website homepages? Only 10% of my site traffic enter through the homepage.

Isn't it time this condition was scrapped internet-wide?

You may simply be dealing with someone who equates a web home page with a print publication cover (not a big surprise actually, but as you note, that's not always accurate.)

However, rather than worrying about the need to clear cut an entire forest, fell the one tree which interests you the most.

Set up a time with the iamge provider to discuss their Terms and Conditions.

Demonstrate, don't tell, demonstrate, that your home page is only a 10% entry point and explain why, in terms they will understand. They've likely just made an assumption, one that's not applicable in your circumstance, so educate them out of it.

Maybe that's their standard response to all inquires, and they haven't really seen your site to see it's value to them.

Sounds like you need to visit the location and take your own photos! So long as it's not Basingstoke or Morecambe that should be quite nice!

I will discuss it with them. It's just disappointing when people make assumptions like that, clearly they don't know what they're talking about because not all traffic enters through the homepage. I've been to the place many times but I only have a little APS camera, and their shots are much more professional with models and so on.
