I have a client who wants to show an 80MB .wmv on her website. I know the best thing for her users to do would just be to download it and view it offline.

But, she wants to stream it from the stie. What options are available for viewing such a large file online?

Thanks,
Stringer

Welcome to Webmaster World, stringer!

You also have to consider the length of the file time-wise. If the clip is only 1 minute long and 80MB in size, then it's almost impossible to stream it. There are only a small % of people that have connection that fast. Even DSL or cable wont be able to handle that. If it's a 10 hour clip, then you can probably stream it even on dial-up.

If it is straight of a video camera, you can probably get the file size down to 10-20 megs without altering the image too much. I work in Premier but there are plenty of video programs out there. First you can shrink the dimensions of the video to something reasonable and then save the quality of the video as 65% or so. 75% of an original source is usually unneeded for web broadcasting.

Once the size is optimized, it will be much easier to stream.
