Can a JPEG file animate?

I came across a jpeg file which had animation in it.

I came across a jpeg file which had animation in it.

* Has anyone ever seen a jpeg file animated?
* Is it possible to animate and save as jpeg file?
* If it's possibles, Which software can do it?

This was not an animated JPEG, more likely a series of JPEG's looped using Javascript. you cannot animate JPEG's - they do not support it, only GIF has this ability.

why don't you just make an animated gif or swf?!

Maybe the site owner:

- Didn't know how to make gifs animate
- Didn't want to spend money on buying a flash tool for one animation
- Wanted to give his image extra protection. If you right click on a gif and save it, that's easy to steal you've done it. It would be harder to right click and save each individual frame. Alternatively you could find the source of a document, then save every frame manually and copy the script, but then you wouldn't be able to use the animation as a word document. (My money's on this one)

It would be hard to write the file and upload the frames but give you less chance of it being stolen. Quite clever. :)
