Hi,
I am a relative novice when it comes to graphics and was hoping that someone may be able to help me choose the right format for an graphical map.

I have an arrangement with a company that is willing to give me the rights to use one of their street maps in exchange for some of my photography.

I would like to use the map for creating electronic guides that are printable and also for producing on-line maps for use on a web site.

The map is very detailed and even has the names of streets in it. The problem is I don't know what format to request the map so that I can produce my other documents (on-line and electronc downloadable) to ensure the greatest flexibility and clarity. Also if there are any other factors I should be requesting when they send the map?

I would be very grateful for any advice or pointers someone may have.

Thank you

I would request it as a vector graphic format, say eps or something that will load into adobe illustrator, corel draw or macromedia free hand. Also ask for the highest quality possbile.

If you have a good quality master that will give the greatest flexiblty you can then export it into the format most suitable for the medium you are using.

I would have said that PDF is not great for a master it is fine if you want to included it in printed matter. But if you want to use it on a website it can be difficult to export the images as a decent resolution. The best vector format would be eps. If you take a look at the ordance servey website they offer maps in different formats, you could download these and take a look at them see how easy you find it with the software you have to manipulate them. They can be found under the free and Fun heading.

Havin said all this if they will only supply pdf files then that is what you have to work with.

Thanks Red_eye. I'll take a look at the ordinance maps and see if I can figure it out.

Best regards,
