A client just sent me a couple graphics in a .mix file format. From some Googling around, I believe this is a proprietary file format of some scanner. Anyway, I haven't found any way to open these things. Windows does understand how to display them - I tried to insert the graphics into a Word document and they displayed properly as thumbnails in the "Locate Picture" dialog box. But Word won't insert them, and I don't have a graphics program that will handle these files.

Any ideas on how I can get these things opened so as to convert the format to .jpg?

(I thought about doing a screenshot of the thumbnails, but they were way to small that . . . )

I believe that is the Microsoft "PictureIt" file format.

Have you tried changing the file extention to .jpg? might force it open as it does with the images my friend sends me (clueless fella)and his scanner saves as some weird combination of letters and a number?
Might be worth a try aye?

There are a couple apps it could be listed here:

[filext.com...]

Have your client export them to a common format if they can.
