I'm in the process of designing an external link icon. I've had a look around and most of these I've seen are around the theme of:

globe
chain links
single arrow >
double arrow >>

...or a combination of these.

Which of these do people think most obviously indicates an external link?

Helen

Did a similar thing in my last job. I drew a small box with an arrow leading out of it. Knocked it back to a subtle grey and alt tagged it: external link. This seems to work and I had had no queries as to what it did (vast intranet).

Cheers Limbo.

Yes, that's another valid way it seems.

Perhaps I am overcomplicating the issue, but I just thought it a bit odd that I haven't found much written on this subject on the web. People seem to be able to argue for ages about other seemingly simple stuff.

I guess I just wondered if there was a 'standard' for this - any accessibility guidelines anywhere?

I also take it we're not going to have a 'globes versus arrows' type flaming session then? I was kind of up for that ;)

Why not a globe with a "WWW" across it?

We debated this for our site and settled on using text (external link) as the standard. Personally, I like limbo's idea better though..sometimes text gets in the way of more important information.

Why would the user not know from context it was an external link?

I guess what I'm saying is I've never clicked on a link and found it to be external without expecting it.

I'm wondering if you need to indicate it next to the link at all.

If you must indicate it, I'd go with an asterisk and put a note in the footer that indicates asterisk equals external link.

The most common one I've seen is the graphic of a arrow pointing to a new browser window for a popup, and a globe for a new site.

Why reinvent the wheel, when users already know what those mean?

Oh, I wasn't looking to reinvent the wheel, quite the opposite really. I just wanted to gauge opinion on the best approach.
