we use freehand for maps. to save for web, i have to import the entire map into photoshop as an EPS, then slice up in photoshop and save each segment as the appropriate map segment.
this is
a) slow (84 MB .psd) and
b) slow (did i mention the 84MB .psd ;-)
this happens everytime we want to edit the map.
is there any way anyone knows to slice up and save a particular section (say 500x400 px) of a freehand graphic as a gif?
or should i be looking into getting fireworks?
any help much appreciated :-)
We do not use photoshop but have a good experience of Web graphic processing.
I suppose that with photoshop as well, it is possible to reduce the definition to 72 dpi. This will decrease the weight. Then use a normal size for a Web graphic. 100 x 200 or anything like that may give you the possibility to use it for the Web. Then export it under gif (optimized octree) or jpeg format. Gif will give you a more exact color. But for a graphic with shades jpeg weight less.
If you cannot reduce the definition with photoshop, try to use paint shop pro which is pretty good for lowering the graphic's weight.
Hope it helps.

thanks for the reply, although i was actually looking for something else.
the problem is not photoshop - but rather the transfer of the freehand file via EPS to photoshop. the resultant .psd is 84 MB big. even with a gig of ram my computer is slow processing and working with that file.
however... i have just installed a trial version of fireworks today and it does exactly what i needed. i am able to keep the layers and vectors of the freehand file in the .png for editing, and still save cropped segments straight to .gifs
am really impressed so far, and it is saving me loads of time.
anyway, thanks for taking the time to answer :-)
p.s. you might want to edit your signature, urls in signatures are not really allowed.
