I run a site that features hundrets of pics to a certain topic. The pics are inserted into static html pages with an ATL text which will not help much if there is no link to the pic to go some place.
If I was to change the pics now to offer a separate page to open with the pic, would that help me for KW density or any other performance measure?

This might help your key word density with regard to SEO, but how will it help your readers? If you review Google's ideas about optimisation it recommends that you make your pages for the benefit of your readers.

Sure and I know that they would like to se the pics separate when clicked at them, so I would not conflict with their intention.
