Hi I am just trying to put together my first website and am not sure if I am using photoshop correctly. I have found the quality tab under the save for web heading. Could anyone please tell me if this is the correct part to reduce the file size?

Hi Ickle Pixie

Welcome to Webmasterworld :)

Are you wanting to optimise a JPEG? You will need to select the file type appropriate to the image in the drop down menu in the save for web window. Photos should generally be saved as JPEGs, Logos and graphics containing flat areas of colour as gifs. In the save for web section you can select the file type you want to output as, and then use the settings to reduce file size. Colours and Quality in GIF and JPEG respectively.

When you have the file to the size you feel is low enough without too much loss then click save.

Ta, Limbo.

Do you have Imageready installed as a Photoshop companion? If so, use the 'switch to' button at the bottom of the toolbar, then you can view 4 different settings of your image, and you should choose the one that retains good quality and is also reasonably small in filesize. You may have to tweak the settings yourself rather than rely on the default Hi, Mid and Low presets. HTH

I second the "Save For Web" option.
